Quick answer

What does this tool do?

Random Team Generator shuffles a participant list and fills the smallest teams first to keep group sizes close. Optional fixed assignments and keep-apart pairs are applied as constraints, but the final teams should be reviewed when rules conflict.

About this tool

Why use this tool?

Random Team Generator shuffles a participant list and builds near-equal groups for classes, workshops, meetings and friendly games. Choose either a team count or target number of people per team, provide custom team names and decide how a remainder should be handled. Fixed assignments can place a facilitator or captain on a chosen team, while keep-apart pairs prevent specified participants from appearing together when a valid arrangement exists. The generator retries constrained layouts and reports an error instead of silently ignoring an impossible rule. Results stay in the browser, can be copied, printed or downloaded and remain visible as accessible text. Random grouping creates a neutral starting point, but it cannot know skills, relationships, safeguarding needs or accommodations. Review the generated teams and make the smallest necessary, clearly explained adjustments before publishing them.

How to use it

  1. Enter every participant once.
  2. Choose the number of teams or people per team.
  3. Optionally add team names, fixed assignments or separation rules.
  4. Generate, reshuffle, print or download the teams.

Common use cases

  • Classroom group work
  • Workshop breakouts
  • Friendly game teams

Practical examples

  1. Divide 23 workshop attendees into five near-equal groups.
  2. Keep two facilitators on separate teams.
  3. Pin a team captain before filling the remaining places randomly.

How it works

Random values come from window.crypto.getRandomValues(). Lists are shuffled with an unbiased Fisher–Yates process. For a wheel, the result is chosen before the animation; for weighted entries, each positive weight defines its share of the total probability.

Random Team Generator FAQ

Is my list uploaded?

No. Entries are processed in your browser unless you explicitly create a share link.

What kind of randomness is used?

The browser Web Crypto API supplies unbiased random values. Wheel animation only reveals a result chosen in advance.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The controls, results and wheel adapt to current mobile browsers and keyboard navigation.

Can I reuse my settings?

Yes. Device storage can remember recent settings unless you turn off local list saving.

Is this suitable for a certified lottery?

No. It is a general-purpose classroom, work, event and decision tool, not a regulated drawing system.
